Artist’s statement
I like the unpredictable, serendipitous, and beautifully imperfect process of printmaking. I use various printmaking techniques as forms of expression, including linocut, etching, chine-colle, engraving, monotype, dry point etching, embossing, and cyanotype.
My art stems from personal experience; being creative is like conversing with life. As no one can live without inhaling and exhaling, no one can live without feeling and expressing.
My interest in nests stems from the current season in life, my children are leaving home, and this change ignited an ongoing search for identity through creative expression.
Deconstructing and using an empty nest implies ending one cycle but the birth of another. Reconstructing the nests into a different form gives them a new life while preserving some of their former identity. Symbolising the natural changes of identity within a person as you journey through life.
The theme highlights birds' vulnerability and ferocity as an echo of the human condition. The pieces tie into the common thread running through my work, where the focus is mainly on life cycles such as death, mortality, and decay.
Through my art, I aim to bring forth the unconscious, knowing that change is a constant and the fragility of life evident. Drawing inspiration from the natural world speaks to the fragile state of the planet and its cyclical nature.
