A Common Song
There are two primary purposes for birds singing, and they are connected.
First, male birds sing to mark territories. A singing bird says, “This place is mine, and I’m willing to defend it, especially from others of my species.” The second purpose of singing is to attract a mate for nesting. Female birds often choose their mates based on visual and vocal cues.
Each bird species typically has its unique song. That allows an individual bird to hear a song and recognize whether the singer is from its species.
We sing for different reasons, entertainment and happiness but also when we are sad and need to resolve issues. Artists have used singing to give hope, promote change, or celebrate something.
I like to focus on the threads that connect us through a common song.
